With the ice being out for a few weeks now, the spring fishing is getting into high gear. Several outing on the local lake have produced some good bluegill and crappie. I am using a 1/64 jig fished about 3 to 4 feet under a float.

Signs of spring

Signs of spring are showing up. The geese have been flying north for the last three days. The lake is showing signs that the ice will be leaving soon. Song birds are making their presence known. The snow is all but dissappeared.
Today was a great day filled with plenty of sunshine, warm temps, and very little wind. I decided to take a short drive in the country to enjoy the afternoon. I seen a flock of geese resting before re-embarking on their journey. I also seen several different flocks of turkeys out enjoying the sunshine.
I managed to get a couple of quick pictures of them.

Spring turkey hunting

I was sucessful in drawing two tags for for the spring turkey season. Now it will be a couple months of waiting for the season to open. This will give me time to hone my calling. I use a slate call, a box call, and mouth calls. It is exciting to set up decoys and be able to call in mature toms. You never know what will happen when you are calling. I have had several time when a coyote will come sneaking in to see if they can get a meal. I have more sucess calling in birds as the season goes on. It seems that in the early part the gobblers and hens are all grouped togather and the toms are not very eager to leave the hens in search one that is not near. Later on you will have gobblers that are seperate or in a small group of gobblers that will respond eagerly to calls.
Good luck to all that have a tag/tags. Happy hunting.

The turkey application will hit the mailbox first thing tomorrow. The unit I am applying for is a double tag unit. With two years preference I have a good chance of recieving the tags I am looking for. If sucessful this will be the start of another great year of hunting.
April is usually a good month as Turkey season opens, the spring is getting into full swing, and the fishing is starting to get good again. The warmer temps and new life emerging gives me enjoyment to be outdors again.

A few of my adventures

This is just a few of my pictures. Follow along as I go through the seasons fishing, hunting and sharing tips and advice along the way.

What I do

I am an avid fisherman and hunter. I live in South Dakota. I enjoy fishing for all species of fish from panfish to paddlefish. My majority of time is spent chasing crappie and blue gill. I fish from shore, wading, and float tube. Follow along as I go through the seasons revealing my methods and tactics for catching fish.

My hunting involves small game, big game, turkey and waterfowl. I hunt using a shotgun, rifle and bow. Bowhunting whitetail deer is my favorite type of hunting.

I am a prostaffer for CKOUTDOORS. More articles on fishing/hunting and advice can be seen here. CKO has several prostaffers and a lot of great people who are willing to answer questions and give you tips on lots of subjects. You can find them at http:\\CKOUTDOORS.com
